Become an Essay Specialist

Want to join the Prompt community? Our global network of Essay Specialists will review over 30,000 college admissions essays from June 2019 to January 2020. We are looking for passionate teachers, insightful editors, and creative problem solvers to help us reach thousands of students.

Above and Beyond Editing

While we are all grammar nerds, we are not a proofreading service. We provide comprehensive, actionable, and educational feedback to help writers tell the best possible version of their story. Our Essay Specialists are intuitive, creative thinkers who are able to see the strengths and weaknesses in any piece of writing, and are capable instructors who can guide a writer to their full potential.

Culture and Expectations

Our Essay Specialists come from all walks of life, from published authors to banjo players, globe-trotting adventurers, lawyers, teachers, journalists, and actors. What brings us all together: a passion for writing and for helping students find their voice. We're a collaborative community, and all new editors receive feedback on their work as they adapt to our editorial approach. We require a 4-hour-per-week minimum time commitment when volume allows, and prioritize applicants who are generally available 10+ hours a week. Finally, we ask that all editors who join our network share our commitment to collaboration and openness to feedback.

Each paper has an associated fixed payment, based on the paper’s length and the editor’s pay tier. We pay trainees an effective rate of $20 per hour and full members $25-28 per hour. The average editor earns around $5,000 for the admissions season, with many earning $10,000+. Not bad for doing the work you love, when and where you want to do it.

Apply before September 30th, 2019 to be considered for our 2019-2020 team. The sooner you apply, the sooner we will review your application. Editors who move forward with us will go through an orientation to learn our approach, and then put that approach into action for an evaluation period. If all goes well, you’ll become a full member of our team, and can get to work empowering students to become better writers, one essay at a time.
